WEREBEARS
HUMAN FORM
a traditional and morally-adept community, werebears live as nomads in the mountains in a type of patriarchal system and usually prefer to live alone, though villages are possible through time. though originally neighbours to windhold, the werebears moved to the northern reaches of Ethea, taking over the mountain range and coastal regions. having the smallest territory in width compared to other races, the bears have the longest and most diverse biome.
due to the forced shifting of the men into bears (refer to: history), the colour of the skin is diverse, though through years of surviving in the mountains, it is most common for dark-skinned and stout heights. although black-haired humans are most common, brown- and blonde-headed werebears are often just as easily found. most 'bears have a collection of thick-furred clothing of the animals they have killed and will hand-wash their clothing before and after a hunt in them. eyes from amber to black are normal though eyes paler than chestnut are thought to be demons and cast into the ocean.
the 'bears have also utilized dogs for the use of pulling heavy things through the snow during the Days of No Shifting, or the days were the sun is too hot to change form comfortably.
the summer equinox is considered a time of great salvation to the 'bears, for it is the only week they are ever able to be shifted no matter the temperature.
the relationship between the bear and the human is slim, and really the only thing similar is the eye colour (which may or may not darker upon shifting) and the personality. the shift is either controlled or wild, and there is no in-between.
SOCIETY .
the king is the overall ruler of the land and though he is often romanticised as a gracious and all-powerful creature, he may actually be a weak-minded creature brought to the throne only by birth. there must always be a king, or at least an heir in line, and the minimum age is eleven to advance. the throne may only be lost by challenging the king, and challenges are not acceptable until the king is at least fifteen.
the queen is the actual backbone to the throne at times, and her word means just as much as the king's, though if he speaks against her, she is overruled. there is no need for the queen except for being married to the king; this role can be empty for decades. demotion is not possible without divorce, however, and divorce can only happen by death.
the brave paw is an old ceremonial term to describe the prince, and heir to the throne, the brave paw is the firstborn son of the king and queen. If the queen and king do not have a child, the rank goes instead to the first male who claims it, though this is often achieved only by fighting all other ambitious males in the kingdom. the brave paw is considered sacred and three trusted guards are always with him.
illegitimates are exactly as they sound. the king may have as many sons and daughters as he wishes, the same goes for the queen, but they will not rise to the throne unless properly fought for.
warriors are the rest of the 'bears, and include mothers, cubs, and the elderly. each village may have their own hierarchy, depending on how the head family wishes it to be had, but the overall voice is the king.
